Day 1: Lima City Tour

After our entire day of flights we decided to let ourselves sleep in until about noon. We woke up, ate breakfast, and headed into Lima Centro for a city tour. We found a nice tour guide named Luis Olivera outside of the Presidential Residence and he offered to take us on a historical tour of downtown Lima. We got a personal tour of the Sanctuary of Peruvian Saints. At this convent/church/monument the skulls of two of Lima's patron saints are still on display inside the church (kind of eerie). We also learned that the church was still home to a fer Peruvian priests and that one wing of the church has been turned into a coed catholic school. While inside we had to venture down some small tunnels that lead to tombs under the church. The remains of Santa Rosa of Lima still reside in the crypt under the church. After this tour we walked around the Plaza de Armas and saw the Iglesia de San Francisco. The tour took about 2 hours so after we finished touring all that colonial Lima had to offer, we found a restaurant called Tanta that was recommended by our hostel owner. The Lomo (beef tenderloin) and the Pescado Frito were both awesome. We then headed back to the hostel and watched Friends with Jeremy and Jo (our hostel owners). While watching TV we planned our next adventure. Tomorrow we will venture south to the oasis town of Huacachica. Hasta Luego!
